About the piece:

Mussorgsky/Stokowski: Pictures at an Exhibition

Modest Mussorgsky wrote this piece as a musical tribute to his friend artist Viktor Hartmann, who died suddenly in 1873 after suffering an aneurysm. Hartmann's works were put on exhibition the following year. Mussorgsky took this as an opportunity to create a work in his honor.

This impressive work for piano opens with a Promenade, which recurs several times - with a steady pulse, but alternating tempo, it seems to suggest a veiwer wandering around the gallery, pausing to inspect pictures more closely. The DSO will perform Leopold Stokowski's 1939 orchestral arrangement of the piece.
